Am I Ugly Test: A Free, Kind and Honest Photo Check

The am I ugly test measures 16 proportions of your face from one photo and shows what is working first. It runs on your device, checks the photo before scoring, and tells you where most people really land, so you read the number in context instead of fearing it.

How to take the am I ugly test without fooling yourself

Most “am I ugly” results are driven by the photo, not the face. A close, low selfie can make the same person score a full point lower than a photo taken properly. So before you trust any number, set up the shot well. Follow these five steps.

  1. 1

Take the photo the right way first

Hold the phone at eye level, about an arm and a half away, with soft light on your face. Close-up selfies from below are the main reason people score lower than they should.

  2. 2

    Look straight at the lens

Keep your head level, your mouth closed and your expression relaxed. Do not tilt your chin up or down.

  3. 3

Upload it in the tool above

The free test runs on your device and checks the photo before it scores anything. If the angle or light is a problem, it tells you how to fix it.

  4. 4

    Read the strengths first

The result starts with what is working in your photo, then the score, then the measurements that sit furthest from the ideal.

  5. 5

    Retest with two more photos

Take two more photos under the same conditions and compare. If the results are close, that is your real range.

Why you look worse in photos than in real life

Two things work against you. First, you are used to the mirror, which shows your face flipped, so a normal photo looks slightly wrong even when it is accurate. Second, a front camera close to your face exaggerates whatever is nearest the lens, usually the nose, and makes the jaw and ears look smaller.

You can see the effect in the numbers. On one AI-generated portrait the same face scored 6.44 from a proper distance and 4.41 from a close, low camera. Nothing about the face changed; the camera did.

Where most people actually score

The scale runs from 0 to 8, but almost nobody sits at the ends. Using community estimates, about 45 in 100 people score between 3.5 and 5, and about 7 in 10 score under 5. Average is the most common result, not a failure.

What to do with a lower result

Start with the things that change the measurement without changing you. In this order, they are:

  • The photo. Eye-level camera, soft light from the front, a level head and a relaxed face. Retest before concluding anything.
  • Grooming. Tidy brows, a clean shave or an even beard line, and a haircut that suits your face shape.
  • Skin habits. A simple routine of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen keeps skin looking even.
  • Posture and sleep. Both change how a face looks in photos more than people expect.

The optional AI report writes these tips for your specific photo and points out which low measurements may just be an artefact of the angle.

What the am I ugly test cannot tell you

It cannot see your expression, your smile, your voice or your style. It cannot tell how people respond to you in person, and it knows nothing about your character. A measured result describes one photo on one day, not your worth. If you want the number explained, read PSL score meaning and the PSL scale guide, or try the am I pretty test for a plain-language answer. The method is on how the rating works.
